With the weather hotting up, it's about time to dig out those running shorts. And while shaving is completely down to personal choice, if you do want that silky-smooth feeling as you run, now's the time to kickstart your hair removal routine.

If you've been put off shaving with disposable razors due to their environmental impact, we don’t blame you. It's estimated that around two billion disposable shavers end up in landfills every year. However, there is a more sustainable option available: razor subscription boxes.

Most shaver subscription brands are plastic-free, and use more durable materials for a longer-lasting razor. Did we mention they conveniently turn up to your door every month, too?

If you're ready to ditch the plastic disposable razors, read on for the shaver subscription services our panel of 165 beauty testers voted the best in the UK.

We can be sceptical when it comes to products claiming to be 'sustainable', but a razor subscription service really does come with a few planet-friendly positives.

While some on our list are completely plastic-free, most come in cardboard boxes that are fully recycled and recyclable – a big improvement on disposable plastic razors, or the ultra-thick plastic packaging supermarket options come in.

Although this isn't a perfect way to look after the planet, some of the brands featured below are working to offset their carbon emissions, whether that be helping to plant more trees or investing in renewable energy. Others have also created their own recycling schemes for used blades, which can be particularly tricky to recycle safely.

And as mentioned, most of the razors on our list are made from hardy materials designed to last longer than flimsy plastic, so they have a longer lifespan, too.

We put 11 razor delivery services to the test with 165 testers, to see which subscriptions came out on top and these were our five winners.

Our panel tried them for over eight weeks, ranking them on how convenient the delivery was, how easy they were to use and the design of the product itself, as well as how well each razor got rid of hair and how long-lasting their blades were.

Made from robust Swedish steel, and featuring a unique flexible hinge to allow for smooth shaving, Flamingo's razor removed hair like a pro.

All of our testers said it coped well with trickier areas around the knees and ankles, while everyone raved about the comfortable, close shave it provided, thanks to its aloe- and shea butter-infused blades.

They couldn't fault the delivery service either, and loved the luxe look of the razor. It did such a good job, all of our testers said they would continue with their subscription after the trial — sign us up!

With the ability to add on everything from a shaving cream to a scrub to your delivery, this unisex razor features diamond-coated blades (talk about fancy) with a strip infused with vitamin E to give the shaver a bit of slip.

The razor also comes in 100% FSC-approved recyclable cardboard, and effectively removed hair including around the knee and ankles. Everyone was impressed with their gentle shave too, which left behind smoother skin.

When you're done with the blades, you can also send them back to the brand where they can be safely recycled. Read one of our WH writers' personal experience here.

Another brand with its own blade recycling scheme is grüum. The blades here feature high-grade steel, which is supposed to reduce drag. Our testers agreed, saying it provided a comfortable shave.

The razor can tackle all areas of the face and body, while the blades didn't rust and were easy to clean. The razor handle felt high quality, too.

The delivery service didn't disappoint, with all testers happy with their letterbox kits. One tester reported an accidental breakage and within 24 hours they were shipped a new razor head.

If you haven't seen Estrid's rainbow-coloured shavers all over your Instagram feed, where have you been?

Testers welcomed the pastel colours into their showers, while the blades themselves remained sharp and rust-free for the duration of the test. They provided a gentle shave that was irritation-free for most, while everyone commented on how luxurious the design of the razor was.

One tester said they 'loved how the package was able to fit through the letterbox. And the packaging itself is simple yet pretty, and fully recyclable.'

Nuddy plastic-free razor subscription service was a hit with testers. The razor is made from solid brass and comes in a variety of bright colours that provided most with a comfortable shave.

The blades were rust-free, long-lasting and, once you're done, can be recycled in your local metal waste bank. It gave one tester 'the smoothest shave' they'd ever had and didn't cause any irritation. Most testers said they'd continue to subscribe after the trial.
